PEA, the Love Hormone

In the initial stages of any love relationship, the brain produces a powerful love hormone, phenylethylamine, better known as PEA. This hormone creates the natural high associated with falling in love. Excitement and risk also produce PEA, which explains why so many people love or are addicted to high intensity, thrill type activities, such as sky-diving, bungee jumping, heil-skiing, X-Games, etc.

Fighting and constant turmoil in a relationship can also produce this little gem. Unfortunately, many couples that feel they're in a rut, or their relationship has gotten boring, begin fighting to 'mix things up a little' and don't understand why they feel 'better' afterwards. The old adage that 'the best sex is Make-Up Sex' comes from a surge of PEA. This attitude and behavior has devastating long-term effects.

Another pattern some people have is to jump from one relationship to another, because they are addicted to the rush of excitement a new relationship brings, and then they leave when a 'normal' routine becomes established. That's our good old PEA doing its thing again.

What do you do? Instead of creating stress and turmoil to get your PEA flowing, create loving, positive activities with your partner to rekindle the feelings you had when you first met.

  • Regularly tell your lover why you fell in love with them in the first place.

  • Make a 'First Date' once a month or so; dress up, buy flowers, go out to a nice dinner or anything else that's wonderfully romantic.

  • Create little romantic surprises to leave for your partner, or present to them for no special reason.

  • Physical contact is extremely important – especially outside of the bedroom – so walk up and give your lover a 60 second kiss and see what happens.
