New Time, New Hope, New Love
Well dear friends, New Year's already a distant memory, and Valentine's Day is almost upon us. It seems like only a couple of yesterdays ago I was writing last year's February column! Time certainly has been evaporating, hasn't it?
Because of that, I have a simple question for you. Are you happy? I mean really happy? How much pure, unadulterated joy is flowing though your life right now? Please take a moment to check-in and assess how much joy you actually experience on an ongoing basis.
Yes, I know this might be an unconventional way to start my Romance Column about V-Day, but there is a deeper issue at hand... I'm seeing an increasing need to reconnect innate joy and unconditional love to HAVING, not wanting. Too many people are NOT feeling, experiencing or even have a sense of what true joy is. This time of year seems to magnify our feelings of, or lack of, love and joy. This issue is universal; it affects EVERYONE, regardless of your romantic status.
So how do we actually do it? Start by thinking about your personal experience of joy. What is it? When does it happen? How long does it last?
To me joy is when my mind is at peace, all is well with the world and I have everything I need. My heart is open, content and happy... in harmony with self and source. The metaphorical half-full/half-empty cup is overflowing.
I find joy in the moments before sleep when my husband, Robert, and I recite our daily "Things I'm grateful for...", the fact my body is a self-healing miracle, that I can do the work I love and am blessed to have all of you in my life. Yesterday in the shower I was struck by the miracle of hot water flowing over me. (It was a slow morning...)
It's not always in the BIG moments that we feel joy. Joy can be found in simple things: your cat playing with a ball of string, watching your children play, putting your arms around someone you love, watching a bird at your bird-feeder, taking a walk in nature, helping a stranger, cutting flowers, walking outside to pick up the morning paper, or talking with an old friend.
Why is this important? Because, we have been "trained" that enuf is not enuf, but more is not really enuf either... so how can we be sure we have love, or joy, or anything else for that matter, if enuf is not enuf? So many of my clients go from one relationship to another, searching for love, joy, connection - you know, our universal needs - without ever knowing WHAT brings them joy.
Secondly, if someone doesn't have an INTERNAL reference for love and joy, how will they know when it's actually there? So many search for those qualities "out there"... hoping, often demanding, that someone else gift them with those elusive qualities. "They will make me happy!" How often have you heard that? How often have you said that? A great partner brings joy - absolutely - but it is part of a great relationship in which both people already know what brings them joy, and are able to experience and share it from within.
So dear ones, first allow joy to pour over you like warm honey, and then pay it forward. Bring joy into someone else's life and you will find you have more love, joy, connection and WOW than you ever thought possible!
I'd like to share the following article by a friend of mine I thot you'd enjoy.
"At the New Year, it is natural to look ahead with hope toward a better future. The custom of wishing oneself and others a year of success and happiness is a tradition rooted in deep wisdom. Human life is governed by subtle laws that cause each of us to create the world we will inhabit in the future. The building materials that shape this future world are our own thoughts, feelings, words, strivings and decisions. Circumstances don't simply happen to us; it is the manner in which we think, feel and act that pull circumstances to us.
Positive anticipation is a powerful force. When we look forward with positive hope and expectation for better circumstances, we are creating the very conditions we picture. When we think in terms of blessings, happiness and goodness, we draw these things our way. Our thoughts of progress, happiness, health and beauty, call into operation the mysterious spiritual and creative forces that produce the very reflection of our inner world of consciousness. For this reason it has been said: 'We think in secret and it comes to pass, environment is our looking glass.' As we focus on goodness, beauty and light, we create a better world for ourselves and others."
